Context: The theme and setting of this painting are typical of the Italian subjects painted by Dutch artists at this time, usually from drawings and sketches made during a visit to Italy. Jan Weenix, who was trained in Amsterdam and Utrecht, was in Rome from 1643 to 1647.The low viewpoint, and dramatically deep back-ground vista are all characteristic of Weenix's compositions, as is the pale blonde-rose tonality. The exotic costume of the bearded figure on horseback is evidence of an interest in Middle Eastern and North African garb that was strong in Rome during the 1640s.
