Context: Although Calabazas is shown in the formal, full-length pose usually reserved for the nobility, he was not a nobleman, but a court jester to the wife of King Phillip IV of Spain. The miniature he holds may be her portrait. His small size (emphasized by the stool), crossed eyes, and malformed left leg may have resulted from a congenital disease. The jester's name means both gourd and simpleton; the pinwheel in his left hand--a symbol of simplemindedness and folly--underscores the point. Such individuals were considered wonders of nature and held a favored position at court.
