Context: The taste for antler and horn furniture developed in Germany in the 1830s and appealed greatly to the nineteenth century taste for exoticism and naturalism. The majority of horn furniture was made in Germany and was most popular among German groups. Wenzel Friedrich, born in Bohemia, introduced horn furniture to San Antonio, Texas, where there was a sizable German population. From the 1880s to about 1900, he produced various types of horn furniture: tables, hat and coat racks, umbrella stands, and seating furniture of every kind. Friedrich published a catalogue of his furniture in 1889, listing chairs such as this one from $75 to $90, depending on upholstery and the rocking mechanism. By 1900, the near extinction of the longhorn cattle, combined with changing tastes, put an end to Friedrich's production.
