Context:

Pierre Bonnard often captured the small, intimate moments of everyday life in his art. At the end of the 19th century, French families would gather around tables after dark to eat, talk, sew, read, or play games. This print shows Bonnard's nephew playing with a toy train. The intensity of the lamplight bathes the young boy's face in a white light, while the rest of the room dissolves in shadow.
