Context: The type of headdress almost certainly dates this head toward the end of Amenhotep III's thirty-eight year reign. The stone of which it was made was highly prized for its hardness and, most of all, its remarkable texture, which permitted subtle gradations of polish--as in the treatment of hair, eyes, and face.
