Context: For many centuries the mountain tiger has been widely recognized in Korea as a messenger of the culture's most important religious deity, the shaman San Shin ("Mountain Spirit"). Crucial to San Shin's popularity were his powers to grant children to women and to bestow long life.Painters of tigers were executed by professional painters, amateur officials, and popular street artists. The paintings were also considered capable of warding off evil. By the 1700s, mountain tiger paintings became appreciatedin their own right as visually appealing images for diplay at home. This painting, created with a medley of myriad fine ink lines, and broad, washy brushstrokes demonstrates the dynamic, and imaginative powers of later Korean painting.
