Context: Jerusalem experienced a revival of Christian pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. During the 12th century, after the city was recaptured from the Muslims by the Crusaders, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was rebuilt, redecorated, and rededicated. With the influx of new pilgrims, especially from Western Europe, lead oil ampullae (small flasks) such as this were briefly reintroduced. The flask was cast with images of the Crucifixion and Anastasis (Christ's Descent into Limbo), which establish a visual connection with the holy sites of Christ's death and entombment. This ampulla belongs to an extremely rare group.
