Style or Period: Italy, 16th century
Context: Chiaroscuro was used in the early 16th century to describe drawings done on a colored paper, where dark ink wash created shadows, and highlights were added with opaque white paint. Printmakers duplicated these effects by printing several woodblocks in color, allowing the white of the paper to act as the highlights. Around 1547, Domenico Beccafumi executed six chiaroscuro woodcuts of Apostles, including St. Peter, his most skillful, complex, and successful prints. The blocks were carved in an innovative manner. In order to attain brilliant highlights, Beccafumi created the effect of thin white hatching lines on a dark ground. He also treated each impression as a separate work of art, experimenting with the number of blocks printed and varying the color combinations.Living in Siena, Beccafumi was an important and extremely versatile artist, probably the most imaginative and daring printmaker of the Italian Renaissance. He began to engrave in the 1520s but was dissatisfied with this linear technique because it could not duplicate the rich tones of his drawings. To achieve areas of tone, Beccafumi began to print one or two woodblocks before printing the engraved plate. Soon he concentrated just on woodcuts.
