Context: This is the top part of a stele or commemorative tablet. It was found at the bottom of a shaft in Shemai's tomb, which was cut into the cliff across the Nile from Aswan. The lower part was never found. The main scene shows the deceased seated before atable of offerings. The three columns in hieroglyphs in the center read: 'The one honored before Osiris, lord of Busiris, the great god, lord of Abydos, that he [the god] may give invocation-offerings of bread and beer, oxen and fowl, travertine [vases]and clothing to the ka [vital spirit] of the chief of police, Shemai, vindicated.'
