Context: Silk weaving became an important industry in Italy during the 13th century. Initially, it was closely associated with Spanish silk weaving and designs were derived from Spanish models. Here, the Spanish influence is apparent in the paired eagles and gazelles flanking concentric bulb-palmettes-motifs that can be traced back to the 12th century Spanish silks.
