Context: Amenhotep III, the ninth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty, erected magnificent temples up and down the Nile filled with images of himself, large and small. This head must have belonged to a standing or seated statue of about life size, although the tall crown makes it appear larger. The crown has a rougher surface than the face because it was originally overlaid with gesso and painted blue. This type of crown, called the khepresh, or "blue crown," was worn by the king for military activities or when performing religious rituals in a temple.
