Description: Large marble vases such as this one were produced especially for villa gardens. The singing and dancing figures are drawn from a wide repertoire of classical types. On one side of this vase, three maenads dance in abandon to the music of wooden clappers, while on the other side two modestly wrapped maidens approach a girl playing a double flute. Although this vessel was intended to be purely decorative, the Bacchic subject matter is especially suited to its shape, since a krater was used in antiquity for mixing wine and water .
