Context: Since the early years of this century, the Rose Iron Works, a Cleveland supplier of architectural ornament, has produced distinguished metalwork. The company's founder, Martin Rose, was born in Austria-Hungary and studied ornamental metalsmithing in Vienna prior to immigrating to Cleveland in 1902. As a result of a return visit to Europe in the 1920's, he persuaded a young designer, Paul Feher, to come to Cleveland and work for the firm. With it's rectilinear and curvilinear patterning, integrated with highly stylized and abstracted natural forms, this screen is quintessential Art Deco in style. It received a special commendation award in the Cleveland Museum of Art's 1930 May Show and has subsequently appeared in national and international exhibitions.
