Context: Regenstein catalogue (1985-1986):The dynamic swirl lines combined with the brilliant chiaroscuro effect contained within the oval shape, make this drawing an unsurpassed example of Boucher's spontaneous genius for decoration. It seems that the composition was not used for any actual ceiling. The Abbé Saint-Non effectively copied it in aquatint in 1766.
