Context: Bierstadt arrived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1832, returning to Germany between 1854 and 1858 for artistic training in Dusseldorf. Bierstadt spent much of this time sketching in pencil and oils out-of-doors, creating small works he would later use in composing his enormous paintings. "The Matterhorn" is an oil sketch probably painted in September 1867, on Bierstadt's second trip to Europe.
