Context: This haunting portrait was drawn several days before the artist's death, as testified by the inscription, which translates, "January 25, 1875, offered to M. Jouveau, curate of Coubron." It may well represent the man who gave Corot his last rites, and certainly may be considered Corot's final artistic statement.
