Context:

Cassatt grew up in Philadelphia and later moved to Paris, where she met the French painter and printmaker Edgar Degas. At his suggestion, she began exhibiting with the Impressionists in 1879, focusing much of her efforts on intimate portrayals of women and children. In addition to her sumptuous paintings and pastels, she became a highly accomplished printmaker, due in part to the influence of Degas and fellow artist Camille Pissarro. She first became interested in color printing in 1890 after attending a major Paris exhibition of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Over the next decade, she developed her own technique of color aquatint (tonal etching), producing such compelling images as The Barefooted Child.
