Context: The triumphs of Napoleon were endlessly celebrated in the art and literature of his time. In 1798, Napoleon led the French army into Egypt, swiftly conquering Alexandria and Cairo. However, in October of that year, an uprising by the people of Cairo surprised the French forces. The French commander was killed, but the revolt was swiftly controlled. Girodet shows the end of the conflict, when the Egyptian rebels were cornered in the Grand Mosque. Brandishing a sword, a French soldier leaps from the left toward an Egyptian rebel who holds his dying comrade. This painting is a preliminary study for a much larger picture now in the palace of Versailles.
