Subject Description: Performed at the Ichimura Theater from the ninth day of the second month, 1771. Kikunojo II is depicted as a high-ranking courtesan making a formal progress in the Yoshiwara pleasure district, escorted in front by a maid or manservant carrying a large collapsible lantern and behind by a parasol bearer. Neither of these boorish types is actually shown in the print, however, so as not to distract from the beauty of the courtesan. On the lantern, which would normally carry the emblem of the house of pleasure to which the woman belonged, appears the personal acting crest (mon) of Kikunojo II-a tied bundle of floss silk (yuiwata). The lavish brocade over-kimono (uchikake) is decorated with chrysanthemums (kiku) in baskets-a pointed reference to Kikunojo II's name-and the obi bears a novel design of fish swimming among water weeds.
