Context: George Inness introduced a new freedom into American landscape painting by using loose brushwork to evoke personal feelings. Drawings and watercolors by Inness are quite rare. All those that are known, about 40 in total, came from the collection of his daughter, Mrs. Jonathan Scott Hartley, who sold them as a group in 1927. This drawing, which was identified in the Hartley sale as "Albano, Italy," probably dates from Inness's second trip to Italy (1870?75). In contrast to the precision of the earlier Hudson River painters, Inness here applied wet washes overlaying one another to create a blurred effect
