Context: As a member of the famed group of Expressionists known as "Die Brücke" (The Bridge), Heckel had always been interested in self-portraiture. The artist's feelings towards himself made up a large part of the Expressionist's search for a more subjective and expressive art. This intense portrait from 1922 shows Heckel in his studio decorated with wall hangings of primitive-like motifs. With his shadowy beard, gaunt face, and darkened skin, he depicts himself like a native standing amidst an artificial jungle. This primitive role-playing was another aspect of the Brücke's desire for a more spiritual relationship to nature and creativity. Even though the Brücke had disbanded years earlier, Heckel continued to explore this kind of primitivism well into the 1920s.
