Context: Perhaps more than any of Lichtenstein's motifs, the brushstroke, as seen in this color screenprint of 1967, has itself become an icon of his art. Parodying the painterly gesture associated with Abstract Expressionism, the artist represents the brushstroke--the principal signature of the artist--as an object in its own right, floating it against a field of colored dots. Lichtenstein's print mimics the photomechanical printing methods commonly used to produce comic strips, underscoring Pop's preference for the impersonal and machine-made image.
