Context:

One of the leading artists of the Surrealist movement, André Masson was strongly influenced during his formative years in Paris by his close association with Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso. From 1934 to 1937 Masson lived Tossa, Spain, a coastal village located between Barcelona and the French border. During this period of tremendous political upheaval and civil war in Spain, Masson painted a series of scenes emphasizing violent carnage and sacrificial death. This painting, whose title derives from Miguel de Cervantes's novel Don Quixote, depicts Sancho Panza on horseback, using a lance to attack a skeletal figure: Death. At the lower right, a jester also attempts to ward off Death's approaching chariot by throwing stones, but like Panza's, his efforts are in vain. This image might be interpreted as an allegory of futile resistance against the growing menace of Fascism, although it may also refer more broadly to humanity's hopeless struggle to resist the finality of death.
