They generally took place in some lonely mountain shrine at night (the red railing here marks the entrance to the Mishima Myojin Shrine), with the actors engaging in a slow, stylized struggle for possession of some precious object.Nakazo I is wearing the disguise of a pilgrim who visits the sixty-six holy sites associated with the Lotus Sutra: gray robes, white leggings and arm covers, a portable shrine on his back, and carrying a staff with jingles (shakujo) and a brass gong, which the pilgrims struck to gain merit. Danjuro V copied his costume from that of the old shrine attendant in the No play (and painting subject) Aridoshi: a "snake's eye" umbrella, high wooden clogs (geta), and a bronze lantern. Both thus had ample "weapons" to deploy in the silent fight scene.
