Subject Description: The actors Ichikawa Danjuro V as a skeleton, spirit of the renegade monk Seigen (left), and Iwai Hanshiro IV as Princess Sakura (right) in the joruri 'Sono Omokage Matsu ni Sakura' (Vestiges of Pine and Cherry), from part two of the play Edo no Hana Mimasu Soga (Flower of Edo: An Ichikawa Soga), performed at the Nakamura Theater from the first day of the second month, 1783Gallery Label:Vestiges of Pine and Cherry is the story of the Monk Seigen who gets expelled from Kiyomizu Temple as a result of his passion for the lovely Cherry Princess, Sakura Hime. Reduced to bitter poverty, Seigen is murdered in a lonely country hut. The monk's ghost, Ichikawa Danjuro V, wears a close-fitting black suit painted to represent a skeleton as he continues to haunt Sakura Hime, played by Iwai Hanshiro IV, whom he blames for his fate. Sakura Hime's kimono forms swirling lines as she lifts one cherry-petalled sleeve in pathetic defense against her macabre suitor. A screen painted with autumn grasses and a crescent moon suggests the atmosphere of a lonely, desolate moor.
