This lively painting depicts artists attending a calligraphy and painting party (shogakai). Such gatherings were an important feature of the cultural life of Edo (present-day Tokyo) during the 1800s. They provided a chance for painters to make their work known and earn some extra income, while the public got to meet artists face to face.
