Context: This masterwork is the only known sculpture of this subject by the artist. Intended for an interior chapel, the sculpture is also remarkable for the fine preservation of its original polychromy (paint). The artist, whose identity is unknown, has been named for the altarpiece he carved in the Bavarian church of Rabenden. The term Vesperbild is the German word for pieta, an image of the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ on her lap. This theme of sorrow and devotion seems to have originated in Germany during the early 1300s, and was more popular in central Europe than in Italy.
