Context: Born in France, Poussin went to Rome in 1624, where he spent nearly all of his career. This painting is an early work, inspired by the rich colors of Venetian painting. Its unusual and complex subject, however, indicates the future intellectual direction of the artist.Within a few years of his arrival in Rome, Poussin was working for the most prestigious collectors there, including Cassiano dal Pozzo, Francesco Barberini, and the Vatican itself
