Context: Rousseau was profoundly influenced by the atmospheric still lifes of Jean Siméon Chardin, whom the artist and other French painters like François Bonvin rediscovered in the middle of the 19th century. a comparison with Chardin's work on the adjacent wall shows that Rousseau similarly depicts foodstuffs on a simple kitchen table concentrating on rich textures and restrained, almost monochromatic colors.
