Wade Fund 1985.4(Cat. no. 47)The elegant design of standing or diving phoenixes among parallel, curvingfloral vines is based on Chinese textiles. The phoenixes are actually oftwo types (notice the difference in their tails). Their combination,probably an innovation of Yuan China (1279-1368), also appears on theembroidered canopy (cat. no. 60) inthis exhibition. In the eastern Iranianworld, Chinese motifs and patterns were incorporated into local designsbeginning in the 1270s.
