Context: [RIGHT]Dragons Chasing Flaming PearlsTapestry (kesi); silk and gold threadCentral Asia, 1200s or earlierThe Cleveland Museum of Art, Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund 1988.33(Cat. no. 17)Although the theme of dragons chasing the flaming pearl isChinese, theeccentric form of the dragons and the way they have been crowded togetherare not. Other kesi woven with this design preserve parts of a bracketedmedallion resembling the so-called 'cloud-collars' worn in Central Asia(see Textile with Lions, cat. no. 19).The intended purpose of kesi with cloud-collar medallions is not clear.Considering that cloud-collars were worn in Central Asia, these tapestriesmay have been woven for use as clothing. Hong Hao (1088-1155), a Chineseemissary, reported that theUyghurs wove robes of kesi. Cloud-collarmedallions, however, were also used in other decorative contexts, and it ispossible that tapestries such as these served other purposes.
