Subject Description: Loutrophoroi were used for ritual cleaning in the ceremonies that preceded a marriage or in funerary rites of the unmarried. This example, perforated through the bottom, served the latter function. On the shoulder, female heads, richly bedecked, appear in agitated floral settings; handles have a serpentine, dynamic shape; vertical zones of palmettes separate the scenes on front and back. At the front, scenes show moments of preparation for a marriage. The bride's entourage displays the needed paraphernalia: mirrors, a fan, jewelry, garlands, oil, and the mystical cistas (boxes or caskets with ritual implements). At the back, other female figures carrying gifts visit a tomb.
